Theatrical Costume Design — From Ballet Leotard to Stage Character
This hands-on class introduces students to the art and construction of theatrical and ballet costumes, with a special focus on how one basic garment can be transformed into many different stage characters.
Students will begin by creating a simple three-piece ballet leotard and then gradually develop it through decorative techniques, sleeves, corset-inspired details, skirts, and character styling. Throughout the course, they will learn not only how to sew, but also how costume construction supports storytelling, movement, and character development on stage.
The program combines technical sewing skills with creative costume design and is inspired by classical ballet, theatrical performance, and traditional stage costumes.
Students will explore:
- Construction of a basic ballet leotard
- Finishing leg, back, and neckline edges
- Creating straps using elastic or binding
- Decorative appliqué and hand embellishment
- Transforming a basic leotard into different stage characters
- Creating decorative corset-style lacing
- Designing and attaching different sleeve shapes
- Understanding how sleeves and details can change the silhouette
- Constructing a Character Skirt
- Learning correct skirt fit for movement and dance
- Constructing a Romantic Ballet Skirt
- Building volume through multiple layers
- Working with gathered rectangles and circle-cut layers
- Creating and finishing a professional waistband
- Understanding closures, hooks, and stage-ready construction
- Combining leotard, skirt, sleeves, decoration, and corset-inspired details into one complete costume
A major focus of the class is learning how the same basic foundation can become completely different costumes through thoughtful design choices. Students will experiment with appliqué, embroidery-inspired decoration, trims, lacing, sleeves, color, volume, and layering to create distinct theatrical identities.
They will also learn how costume designers think about the relationship between character, story, movement, silhouette, and stage presence.

Inspired Stage Costume
The course culminates in the creation of a complete theatrical costume inspired by the “Peasant Dance” aesthetic from the classical ballet Giselle.
The final costume brings together the techniques developed throughout the program and may include:
- A fitted ballet leotard
- A wide corset-inspired waistband
- Decorative lacing
- Character sleeves
- A romantic ballet skirt
- Hand-applied decorative details
By the end of the course, students will have experienced the full journey of costume creation — from a simple base garment to a finished stage look with its own character, movement, and visual story.
